Frequently Asked Questions
What is COMPASS?
COMPASS is a free, open-source desktop application that helps you manage your character sheets, source books, maps and other tabletop rpg related documents in one place.
Can I use COMPASS for ...?
Yes. COMPASS is not limited to organizing RPG documents. It can organize documents of any file type and webpages so it can even be used to organize other documents for school or work. It was however designed with tabletop rpg players and game masters in mind so some features such as integration with Homebrewery and GMBinder may not be relevant for you.
Can I contribute to COMPASS development?
COMPASS is open-source and welcomes contributions. However to not spend all your time implementing a feature that you specifically want and has not been widely requested. It will only end in heartbreak when I decide to decline the PR to prevent bloat. Go to the github issues page and look for issues tagged with 'Help Wanted'.
Is COMPASS available on Linux/MacOS?
No, COMPASS is only available on Windows. A Linux compatible version is planned and will release as v2.0.0. However, some members of the community have had success running COMPASS on Linux using Wine & Bottles. You can check the discord for more info.
I do not understand why certain items show up when filtering on certain tags.
The hierarchical taggging system can be confusing. There are infographics that should clarify their behavior in the tags-explained channel of the discord server.
Is COMPASS safe to run?
You can verify that COMPASS is safe to run by checking the code yourself, as it is open-source. Additionally, you can review the community feedback and reports on its security. In order to verify that the distributed binaries are compiled using the source code on GitHub, you can verify the digital signature of the executable. The official binaries are signed using a code signing certificate from SignPath Foundation who download the source code directly from GitHub, compile it, and provide me the signed executable for distribution. Some virus scanner might still flag COMPASS as a potential threat because it is relatively unknown. If you have any doubts, you can always compile COMPASS from source or use a service like VirusTotal to scan the executable.
